By April M. Washington, Rocky Mountain News Denver City Council placed its final stamp of approval Monday on the settlement to pay more than $1.3 million to the family of Paul Childs - a month before the first anniversary of the teen's death. The council voted 11-1 to approve the settlement as the city strives to bring closure to last summer's police shooting of the developmentally disabled 15-year-old.
Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz cast the dissenting vote, remaining steadfast in her position that Childs' criminal-like behavior led to his tragic death. Councilwoman Carol Boigon was absent. Under the terms, a $726,115 check will be made payable to Helen Childs and her attorneys, Holland & Hart LLP. Annuities also will be established for Helen and Ashley Childs, Paul's older sister. Helen will receive a monthly payment of $3,783.72 for the next 20 years. Ashley will receive $5,000 per year through June 5, 2008. Copyright 2004, Rocky Mountain News. All Rights Reserved. |
